Grinding

Teeth Grinding

Overview:

  • The dentist will custom make an occlusal guard for the patient to wear to protect the teeth, jaw bones, and jaw muscles from grinding, or bruxism.
  • A custom Occlusal Guard is made by the dentist for the patient to wear. The Guard protects the teeth, jaw muscles, and jaw bones from grinding.

Typical Issues:

  • Grinding can lead to cracked or broken teeth, sore and weakened jaw muscles. An Occlusal Gaurd prevents this activity.

What to Expect:

  • The dentist will position the patient’s jaw into the position the guard will hold them in and then record the positioning of the teeth.
  • The patient’s jaw is positioned in the guard and the dentist records the positioning of the teeth.
  • Impressions of the patient’s teeth are created to help create the Occlusal Guard.
  • Grinding typically happens at night so is usually prescribed as such.
